Port Ellen Panorama Picture

Nancy from British Columbia, Canada, sent me this lovely panorama picture from Port Ellen. She took the 5! pictures in September this year during the Islay Jazz Festival and created this beautiful panorama. More pictures from Nancy in her online album. Clicking on the picture below will show a large version in a new window.

Another view of Islay

The Geograph British Isles project aims to collect geographically representative photographs and information for every square kilometre of the UK and Eire, and you can be part of it.

These are the starting lines of text from a very interesting website. The aim is to cover every square kilometer of the British Isles with pictures. So far there are 255,438 images covering 138,848 grid squares. A grid square is about a square mile and can include several images. Everyone can participate in this huge project.

What is geographing? According to the website It's a game - how many grid squares will you contribute? It's a geography project for the people. It's a national photography project. It's a good excuse to get out more! It's a free and open online community project for all

Islay has already some squares filled with pictures but there are a lot of gaps as you can see on the following link: squares on Islay with pictures. If you like to participate you can register at the Geograph British Isles Website and add your contribution

Islay from the Paps of Jura

An extraordinary picture from Islay this time. Arra Fletcher made this picture some years ago from the top of the Paps of Jura standing in the snow. He managed to capture the whole island in one shot. Very well visible are the Sound of Islay, Loch Ardnahoe, Loch Ballygrant and of course Loch Indaal.
