It doesn't happen often in the winter that we have clear blue skies, sunshine and wintry conditions with a wee bit of snow. So if it does one should make the best of it and go out. Yesterday was such a day, it started off with wintry showers but gradually they died out and it turned out to be a beautiful but chilly day. When winter comes to Islay the best chance for some snow on lower grounds is usually the area between Bridgend and Port Askaig. As we had to be in the area anyway we went for a beautiful walk in the woods between Ballygrant and Port Askaig. A wee description of this walk, which is also great in other seasons, can be found below.
Circular Walk Ballygrant Keills Port Askaig
The total length of this walk is 10km or 6.3 miles over good footpaths. As it's a circular walk you can park anywhere along the route. We parked at Ballygrant Hall but you can also park at the wee parking space opposite the Caol Ila road. From Ballygrant Hall walk along the Glen Road and turn left into Dunlossit Estate. When you reach Loch Ballygrant turn left and keep on walking straight ahead through some beautiful woodland. This track ends near Port Askaig if you keep on following it. Continue reading....
If you turn left at the Lily Loch, famous for all the water lillies in summer, you'll end up on the mainroad opposite the parking space at the Caol Ila Road. From here follow the footpath next to the main road and you end up in Ballygrant where you started. For coffees and teas you can visit the Persabus Ceramics Cafe, Ballygrant Inn just outside Ballygrant or you can visit Labels, located in the village.
This is one of the nicest walks on the island as you walk both in woodland, along Loch Ballygrant, Lily Loch and in more open areas which offer stunning views over the Paps of Jura and the hills and farmland around the villages of Keills and Ballygrant. More details of this walk and a map can be found on my Strava profile
