Walk Islay 2008 Programme - 12-18th April
Saturday 12th April. ?A pilgrimage with DJ visiting six ancient chapels?. We meet up with Donald James MacPhee at 10.00 am sharp at Dunlossit Kennels, Ballygrant. A circular walk of around eight miles (about six hours). We reckon this is a strenuous walk to start the week...
Sunday 13th April. Walk 1 - Lindy MacLellan and Bryony MacFarlane are our leaders from Bunnahabhain at 10.00am - This is a fairly strenuous walk, about eight+ miles, taking about 6 hours. Walk 2 - Susan MacGhie at 14.00hrs High Road Junction which leads back into Bowmore via Cruach. A three hour walk of moderate walking covering four miles. At 21.00hrs in the Port Charlotte Hotel, there will be some light music along with some of the locals, so come along for a pint and enjoy the craic! No stars for this one, sorry.
Monday 14th April. Walk 1 - Walter and Beth Ramsay are our leaders. Meet 09.45 for 10.00 start from the Cask warehouses at Bruichladdich Distillery! About eight miles of challenging walking, taking about six hoursWalk 2 - Lindy MacLellan and Florrie MacAllister at 09.45 pm at the car park Ardbeg Distillery to walk to Solum. Around 2.5 hours and 4 miles of moderate walking. ?Visitors Welcome evening?, at 20.00hrs, to be held at ICCI Bowmore. Read more.....Tuesday 15th April. Walk 1 - Bolsay with Jack Adamson at 09.00hrs sharp at the cark park at the Auction Market, Bridgend. A strenuous 14 miles. for all you hardy walkers. First 14 applicants only. Walk 2 - Michel Copleston from RSPB Oa reserve, Upper Killyen at lO.00 sharp. About 4 miles of moderate walking taking 3 hours.
Wednesday 16th April. Walk 1 - James How to Colonsay - meet Port Askaig at 09.45 Around 5 moderate miles. Back on Islay by around 7.00pm. Walk 2 - James and Mary MacAulay meet at 13.30pm MacAulay & Torrie?s shop in Port Ellen. 5 miles of moderate walking, about three hours. Walk 3 - The Service Point, Jamieson Street, Bowmore at 13.30pm for a gentle 'walkaboutabit' walks.
Thursday 17th April. Walk 1 - Jura with Gordon Muir and Louise Gregory, meet Port Askaig at 09.10 for shared transport on the 09.30 ferry - about 6 miles taking around 3 hours of challenging walking. Walk 2 - Visitor centre, RSPB Loch Gruinart Reserve with Catherine Fotheringham, 09.30. Moderate, about 2.5 hours. Walk 3 - James How from RSPB 10.00 Loch Gruinart Visitor Centre to hide and woodland, about 2 miles and 2 hours. 20.00hrs on Thursday evening there will be an illustrated talk, on lslay wildlife by George Jackson at the Wildlife Centre, Port Charlotte.
Friday 18th April. Walk 1 - Bheinn Bheigier with Tom Dunn (from Ardtalla) Meet 10.00hrs opposite the Ramsay Hall, Port Ellen. Around five miles of moderate to challenging walking 3-4 hours. Walk 2 - Iain MacPherson at 10.00hrs at Ardnave, about five miles, graded moderate and 3- 4 hours. Walk 3 - 18.00hrs with Michael Copleston at the Visitor Centre, RSPB Loch Gruinart reserve. The ?Ghost walk?. Around three miles moderate walking. Two hours. A nominal fee will be charged for each walk, and suitable footwear and clothing is strongly recommended.
We regret that dogs will be allowed only on the Sunday walk from Bunnahabhain.
