The Ella Edgar Highland Dancers in 2014

Many visitors to Islay have most likely seen the colourful Highland Dancers performing somewhere, on a visitor welcome evening, at the Islay Show, the Islay Festival or somewhere else. Back in I wrote about their successes and since then things have only become better. In the Ileach of 10 January Ella Edgar wrote an article with an update on 2014, so time for an update.

During the year the dancers entered 20 competitions, winning an amazing total of 487 medals and 31 trophies and three Argyll & Bute team sashes, allowing the three winning dancers to be part of the Argyllshire team at the Highland & Islands Festival of Music & Dance in Oban in May. A very successful Islay competition was reinstated, the first since 2003, with dancers from Campbeltown and Rothesay entering and the Judge being Sheila Anderson from Dunoon.

Our annual exams in June were encouraging for the 31 dancers who undertook and passed at a high level, with two of the more experienced dancers gaining teacher’s status with Distinction. The SDTA celebrated 80 years in existence, and offered a ‘one off ’ 80th Anniversary Performance Award which was given to the thirteen dancers who performed for it. During the year, the dancers performed at 42 gigs throughout Islay and Jura, a 21st birthday and also a wedding celebration. Three dancers were selected for a photoshoot on Jura, for an American catalogue.
