Successful Summer for Islay and Jura Youth Action

The Islay and Jura Youth Action Group thanked everyone who took part in their Summer Activities which were attended by many, locals as well as tourists. In an article in the Ileach they write: "We had a great number of young people attending our dance, drama, filmmaking, horse riding, beach BBQ and disco events, concluding that our summer program was a success. Thank you to tutors Lyn MacIntyre, Laura Woodrow, Shonie Barker and Alice Hathaway.

Islay & Jura Youth Action: Summer on the beach

Thank you to Ballivicar Farm, Mundells, Sean, Pamela McLellan Baker and to the staff and volunteers who attended and helped out at the activities. A special thank you to Mairi McCuaig; you are a dedicated volunteer and we would not have managed without your help and support throughout the summer. Your help is very much appreciated! Most importantly, thank you to all the young people who attended our activities which combined enjoyment, challenge, learning and achievement; we hope you all had a great time.

We encourage everyone involved to give us their views and recommendations on improving our next sessions. We are your Community Youth Group and are growing from strength to strength with your support and encouragement. We welcome links with other groups on Islay and Jura, to build a support network locally. Continue reading.....

Many thanks to the young people and volunteers who gave up their time to raise funds for Islay and Jura Youth Action during our bag pack on Saturday 24th August in the Coop. A warm and heartfelt thank you to visitors and locals alike who financially and verbally supported the work that we are doing with young people, creating a secure environment for them to learn and ‘hang out’ and providing formal and informal activities at a very crucial time in their lives. We raised an amazing £708.38!! This money will go towards buying new equipment to keep our members busy in the winter months. We have had requests for an x-box, jigsaw puzzles, wii games, an I-pod docking station and some requests that may not be so manageable; a horse, and a dog???

Good luck to the drama students currently being supported by Islay and Jura Youth Action, CyberCafe Islay and Argyll College to complete SQA Drama units through IJ Youth Action Performing Arts Summer Project. Links with Islay High School and Argyll College are now in place and we are delighted that a further two units are scheduled to run during the school timetable until Christmas. This will enable students to achieve an NPA Professional Theatre Preparation award. Watch out for a super performance near Christmas.

Student Zoe Wells comments; “I really really enjoy doing the course, and I’m so grateful to have such an opportunity. It has given me more confidence in myself, and I have grown closer to all the people on the course. I know a lot more about what makes a good actor and can’t wait to continue the rest of the course”

The IDEAS resource centre has proved invaluable as a base for our activities. The young people feel they have a place of their own, and love coming along each week. Keep up to date with activities on Islay and Jura Youth Action Facebook page, and have a browse through our photos. Thank you to the Islay & Jura Youth Action Volunteers for their on-going help and support and to Janice, Kerry and Cersty who continue to offer an exciting program weekly. We are currently seeking volunteer support to start up our older youth club. The rota will involve attendance once a month, so if you can spare the time we would be delighted to hear from you. We are proud to serve our community, Islay and Jura Youth Action. Email: ijyouthaction@yahoo.co.uk
