Stormcats Islay Receives Crown Estate Award

Stormcats was awarded "The Crown Estate One to Watch Award" for Excellence in a Marine Business 2010. The presentation was made in Inverness By the Rt Hon David Mundell MP Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland. Stormcats, a family-owned Islay boat builder’s growing international reputation and ambitions for its high performance and innovative designs has been recognised at the regional business awards. The Crown Estate One to Watch Award for a Marine Business was last night presented to StormCats Ltd. The company was established in 1999 and has since become Scotland’s largest fibreglass boat building company, custom building over 80 boats, predominately for the leisure market in Scotland, Norway, Ireland and England, with a trademark strength and resilience. StormCats continuously develops new designs and its range features modern materials, such as recycled bottles for buoyancy and hull technology, including a catamaran which will deliver 30-40% fuel savings. It has identified potential opportunities in building service boats for the growing offshore wind and wave power sector. The presentation was made by Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland David Mundell MP, at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry’s Highlands and Islands Annual Dinner and Business Excellence Awards, which attracted 350 guests from the region.

Alasdair Rankin, Head of Marine Business Development for The Crown Estate in Scotland, said: “Stormcats have demonstrated innovation and vision over the last decade, together with a real appreciation of emerging opportunities in the leisure market and the renewable energy sector. “We were also impressed by their drive for sustainability, using recycled materials and developing designs that will deliver significant fuel savings. “The Crown Estate is pleased to be able to help celebrate business excellence in the Highlands & Islands and wish Stormcats ongoing success.”
