Small Islands Film Festival Programme

The Small Islands Film Festival will take place at Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle from Friday 3rd October to Sunday 5th October. Films on themes relating to Islay and island life will be shown in the Screen Machine, with the opportunity to view and discuss archive films of Islay in Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle. The festival includes a fascinating range of films from all over the world, but whether it is the islands of Canada, Ireland or the South Atlantic Ocean there are recurring themes in all the island communities which resonate with life on Islay. The Saturday afternoon will celebrate seventy years of films made on Islay. The session will include the 1938 film 'Cargo for Ardrossan', archive film of Islay Shows and cattle markets in the 50s, through to the recent award-winning 2007 short film 'And It’s Goodbye to Care'.

There will also be the first big-screen showings of the 2008 short film 'The Bride of Kilnaughton' and the Bowmore Primary School animation 'Dubh Sìth (The Black Fairy)' Les Wilson from Caledonia TV (and Port Charlotte) will introduce his film on the Scottish writer Martin Martin, and will preview his new film 'Eilean nan Roan'. Other people from the film industry taking part will be members of the Small Islands Film Trust, and Michelle Cotter from FilmG who will be providing details about their Gaelic Short Film Competition. The major feature films 'Seachd' and 'The Maggie' will be the highlights of Friday and Saturday evenings respectively, and advance booking for these from Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle (810 818) is recommended.
