I think the following post is a perfect follow up on yesterdays post about old Islay images. This post is about new accommodations housed in the former Port Charlotte village school, a building which will recall many happy childhood memories for a lot of people. The building has quite a history, being built as a church, later used as a school and from 1976 it became the local village hall. At this very moment the building, beautifully restored and white washed, is a luxury accommodation called Port Charlotte Holidays. The present owners, Margaret McCallum and her husband, architect Sirus Jafari, contacted me a while back to discuss their website listing in the Islay accommodation section of Islay Info. Recently their accommodation website has been completely revamped and is now one of the most comprehensive accommodation websites on Islay. Besides the usual accommodation pages the new site also holds information about Port Charlotte, local directions and attractions and includes a highly interesting section with many images of the former Port Charlotte village school including an image of the class of 1911. Of course I asked Margaret to write something for the Islay weblog to introduce her new site and she happily agreed. Continue reading......
Margaret McCallum: In 2003 the former Village Hall in Port Charlotte was placed on the market. This was at the same time as we were looking for a base on Islay. We both decided that this was to be the one and the work commenced. Now, a number of years on, the project has finally reached completion. Port Charlotte Hall, or the 'Old School' has been transformed into three stunning apartments and two beautiful cottages, all of which are available for self- catering holidays. Whilst the interior has undergone dramatic changes, the exterior has remained as it always was. The cottages, whilst new, have been described as looking as if they have always been there- a compliment indeed.
'We have tried to take great care of the building and we are very much aware of the memories that people in the village and beyond have of the Hall. On our new website we have a section dedicated to the history of the Hall. You will see some photographs from the distant and the not so distant past. This is an area which we are keen to develop so if you have any photos related to the 'Old School' or the Hall and you don’t mind these being made public- perhaps some school activities or perhaps you know a former “Miss Port Charlotteâ€, we would be delighted to post them on the site.
We have now had many guests at Port Charlotte Hall- They love the accommodation, but what makes them return again and again is the timeless charm of the village of Port Charlotte and the very warm welcome which they receive here. On the new website, we have tried to show the whole village at its best as well as all that Islay has to offer.
The project at the Hall has not been without difficulties, but fortunately, none were insurmountable. We have been helped along the way by many to whom we are extremely grateful and our patient neighbours are truly exceptional. Why not have look at the new site to see what we have done?
