Meet Meat Islay
The new abattoir being built at Avonvogie will enable the 'Meat Islay' concept to develop - which will be a trade mark that guarantees that the animal bearing the mark was born, bred and slaughtered on Islay. It will enable Ilich, visitors and businesses alike to buy animals directly from participating Islay farmers, either as live animals at the farm or mart, or butchered, packed and delivered to your home. A number of Islay farmers have enthusiastically welcomed the idea - it will enable them to sell their produce directly to their own customer base which may be family, friends, visitors or even the owners of holiday cottages who wish to stock their freezers with top quality Islay meat.
The concept has been developed by Dunlossit Estate manager Chloe Randall who told the Ileach: 'The idea is to create a new pathway for Islay farmers to connect with the consumer and add value to their product - but without any onorous paperwork trail or unwieldy marketing umbrella. It is hoped to enable farmers to expand their operations and earn more for their labour without being forced to pay any subscriptions, join any marketing organisation or enter into a binding contract with supermarkets that demand continuity of supply at unrealistic prices. 'The abattoir should be up and running late spring or summer - but there is no reason why folk should not ask their local farmer friend as to whether they are interested in selling - it will be as simple as that....
Donald Fletcher is one of the farmers on Islay who's a strong supporter of "Meat Islay", and he's a gifted lawnmower too :-)
