A good tip when you're on Islay is to visit the Islay Art & Craft markets. It's a good opportunity to get to know some of the local artists and craftspeople and at the same time buy locally made items for yourself or as a gift for the people back home. There is a good variety of locally produced items from which some aren't for sale somewhere else on the island. If you can't find what you're looking for there's a good chance one of the artists can make it for you. All the more reason to pay them a visit at Port Ellen or Bruichladdich.
A few months ago the Made on Islay association started a new website with information and the 2008 dates. So far the website has one page but Lesley Lutomski, the secretary, told me that there will be additional pages later on which will have information about the individual participants.
I already mentioned the locations of the markets, being Port Ellen (Columba Hall on Thursdays) and Bruichladdich (Bruichladdich Hall on Tuesdays). The dates for Port Ellen are: Thursdays from 22nd May until 7th August, Thursdays from 21st August until 18th September and Saturday 27th September. The dates for Bruichladdich are Tuesdays from 3rd June until 23rd September. You can enjoy refreshments, coffees, teas and home baking and the entrance is free.
