Machrie Hotel and Golf Links New Website

Machrie Hotel and Golf LinksThe Greens of the Machrie Hotel and Golf Links have shifted towards a different colour and it all happened today! Well not the colour green on their Golf Holes but merely the colours on their website. In the last weeks the whole Machrie website has been restyled and received a different layout, new fresh colours and impressive new pictures, taken by Mark Unsworth from Islay Studios.

For those of you who have never heard of The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links, here is some background information: The golf course at the Machrie was laid out in 1891 by pioneering designer Willie Campbell. Today The Machrie is getting a wider name for itself as one of the world's top links courses. When Campbell first saw the land being proposed for the course, he said it was 'the best ground for a golf course that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing.' In fact, apart from some minor modifications, this challenging course has changed little in over 100 years, and has a fascinating history.

At 6250 yards long, the folks at the Machrie describe the course as a subtle beast with a sense of humour. In the natural sand dunes lurk its wicked teeth, and a capricious temperament sometimes provoked by winds of varied strengths and direction. Immaculately maintained by Simon Freeman and his team, the range of classical features are kept to the highest standards, using the best in modern green-keeping technology. Spacious and full of light, they are all equipped with en-suite bathroom, television, direct dial telephone, tea and coffee-making facilities, hairdryer, and those other comforts you need when you’re away from home. The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links are located on the low road between Port Ellen and Bowmore.

The new website offers a lot of information about the golf course, hotel and of course Islay. In the golf section you will find maps of all the 18 holes as well as an interesting account on the use of hickory shaft golf clubs, made from the wood of the hickory tree. Furthermore there is information about the Machrie Spring Challenge, which is this weekend, the Machrie Team Challenge in October and the Machrie Open in May. The hotel section has information on the rooms, the lodges, prices and two sample menus from their fine restaurant. In the Islay section is information about activities on Islay, whisky and a travel section with map.
