Busy Times at the Islay Natural History Trust
We’ve had a busy few weeks at the Centre with lots of visitors through the doors and many people taking part in our fabulous Butterfly Fun Day. Thank you to all who helped with this event. Everyone had great fun making edible caterpillars and icing butterfly cakes. We considered having a competition for the best decorated cake but none of them made it to the judging stage! We collected Cinnabar Moth caterpillars and Niall Oliver led us on three 15 minute butterfly counts.
There is a definite abundance of Small Tortoiseshell and Green-veined White butterflies on the island this year, although it was Common Blue that won in the count at Killinallan where we just about managed to learn more about flower power before the rain called a halt to the day’s events. At the Festival of the Sea the wind and tide put paid to our exploring sandy shore session, but Lorna painted lots of faces whilst Jane and I manned the stall, selling the popular otter squares and helping with craft activities. The fun continues both in and out of the Centre. Do pay us a visit whether you’ve done so already or not - there’s always so much more to see.
Next Rambles are at Kilchiaran on 19th Aug at 2 pm. There is a Family Activity Sessions on 13th Aug, Beachcombing at Uiskentuie - meet at Kilchoman turn off at 2pm and on 20th Aug, Flower Power at Killinallan - meet at Killinallan gate at 2pm. No booking required but phone 01490 850 288 for more details.
