Today the Maltings in Port Ellen opened for tours, and they will also be running tours on Wednesday & Thursday this week. There, visitors saw the drums and peat fires used in processing raw barley to make the malt for producing Islay malt whisky. A demonstration was also given in one of the Port Ellen warehouses, and the Maltings presented an exhibition of old distillery photographs and documents. Advance booking is required for Maltings tours. The day ended at Laphroaig’s Filling Store with a festive ceilidh led by the popular Howff Band, where all could join in with the traditional Scottish country dances.
