Islay is a very popular holiday destination and the demand for accommodation is still growing. I don't have exact numbers for the whole of Islay but from my own Islay Accommodation website I can estimate that there are around 170 to 200 properties for rent, this number includes self catering homes, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses and hotels. More and more second home owners decide to rent out their holiday home when they aren't on the island and more owners of farms and crofts decide to step into the tourists business as an extra source of, sometimes very necessary, income.
Recently Gill and Robert Johnstone, the owners of Balaclava Croft near Port Ellen, undertook their biggest ever project. With financial grant assistance from the Scottish Rural Development Programme they rebuilt the original Croft House with a brilliant team of local builders to produce a stunning, luxury & comfortable self catering Holiday House. They run their accommodation business under the name Islay Croft Holidays and they don't take half measures if you read what they offer: "The Old Croft House, built in a very peaceful location, offers a "Snug area" with curved soft sofas around a stunning woodstove fireplace, spacious open plan oak kitchen / dining area with opening to the sunroom. From the Croft House there are panoramic sea & hill views all around. Upstairs is master room with ensuite, 6 ft oak sleigh bed + double sofa bed overlooking magnificent picture window, a twin room + treble room, 5ft king & 2 singles. All rooms have exposed beams and underfloor heating from a ground sourced heat pump via the fields." This all sounds very impressive and if you take a look at the full size Image gallery on their website you can see what they mean.
The Old Croft House isn't the only house, from June onwards they also have Balaclava Croft House on offer. Both houses are available as self catering rental throughout the year and sleep up to 8 adults each or 6 adults and 2/4 children depending on age. Their prices are very reasonable so if you're looking for something special this year head on over to their new website which has been launched today www.islaycroftholidays.com
