It's been a while that I have mentioned new Islay accommodation websites but today I have two of them for you. One property with a new website in Port Ellen, The Grange Guesthouse, and one completely new accommodation business on Islay, Kentraw Farmhouse. Let me start with the latter which started in the last couple of weeks.
Kentraw Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast is situated near Bruichladdich, between the Kilchoman road (B8018) and Bruichladdich to be precise. Due to its elevated position there are beautiful views over Loch Indaal and towards the central part of the island. This new business is owned by Hervey and Susan Magnall who are from Lancashire England. It was the whisky that brought them to Islay in 2005 and, like many before them, they fell in love with the island and the people. Leaving the island after their first trip was difficult and they made a vow to return to Islay, which they did on several occasions in the years thereafter.
It was in 2008 when they saw Kentraw Farmhouse advertised for sale on the internet and a quick trip was made as well as an offer, which turned out to be the beginning of quite an adventure. Susan: "‘Project Kentraw’ officially started early in the summer of 2009. We were faced with a mammoth task to extend and fully renovate the property, and it was made all the more difficult when juggled with work commitments at home, not to mention the 330 mile commute and two hour ferry journey!!!" During the development work they had various ideas about the future of the house. Always knowing they would not be able to relocate to Islay immediately. Susan’s mum, Geraldine, offered to relocate to the island to manage the Bed and Breakfast for them. Susan: "Geraldine had visited the island several times during our renovation work and was also captivated by the island’s charm and the warm and generous nature of its residents. Kentraw Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast offered a whole new lifestyle for Geraldine, where she could meet lots of new people and try her hand at growing vegetables and keeping chickens. This was the perfect solution and we are happy that our house and our future guests are in excellent hands." Continue reading......
So with a lot of blood, sweat and tears — and plenty of help from a handful of skilled tradesmen, very good friends and alcohol — the work was completed by summer 2010. The house was transformed to what you see today, well that is if you are on Islay. We have to do with an image of the farmhouse for now which was made during the renovation period. The weather hasn't been good enough in the last weeks to make some proper outdoor images but they will soon be published on their new and very good looking website which has beautiful interior images as well as outdoor photography from the hand of Mark Unsworth from Islay Studios who is practically their neighbour.
The Bed and Breakfast itself is of a very high standard. Kentraw Farmhouse offers three luxurious rooms which includes a stunningly beautiful "Master Suite". The family suite occupies rooms three and four, although they aren't ready yet, they will become available soon. All rooms have En–Suite facilities, Wi-fi connectivity, luxury bedding and complimentary toiletries from Arran Aromatics. Bookings are open and Geraldine can be contacted by telephone on 01496 850643 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org. I wish Geraldine, Susan and Hervey good luck with their new venture on Islay.
The second accommodation is an established business and this new accommodation website belongs to a beautiful house in Port Ellen called "The Grange Guesthouse". This house has quite some history attached to it. The house is a traditional 2 story stone house built in 1845 which proudly overlooks the village of Port Ellen, originally built as a Manse by Sir John Ramsay of Kildalton. The house stands in well cared for grounds which are a joy to walk and sit in. The Grange Guesthouse is in the hands of Margaret and Harold Hastie, both Ileachs, which comes in handy because they can bring in a lot of local knowlegde to get the most from your stay on Islay.
The Grange Guesthouse has two beautiful rooms; a front room which is a spacious double room which can be easily converted for sharing by use of a sofa bed, this room has panoramic views over the village and across to Ireland. Their Family room has a double and single bed with East views and enjoys the morning sunrise. Both rooms have hospitality trays, hairdryers and TV. There is a also a guest lounge with Satellite TV, DVD player & family games. You can find more information on their website and to book a room you can contact themy by telephone on 01496 302035 or by email: email@example.com.
