Bowmore in the 1970s and beyond 2010

In the weekly series about the images and ads from the wee nostalgic Islay Guide Keith Faulks sent me, I want to show you a very nice image of Bowmore, a nice follow up on yesterday's image of Bowmore Fair day. Why the title Bowmore in the 1970s and beyond 2010? Bowmore is about to change and expand dramatically. Change because the town will benefit from a £300,000 funding scheme. Expand because of the Shoreline project, an expansion plan stretching west behind Islay High School which will offer housing, retail, hotel, community, heritage/tourism and business uses. Two large projects for Bowmore, and the expansion is in fact the largest expansion project since the 1770s!

Before the plans for the Shoreline project will become final a public consultation will be held this week on Islay where every Ileach can express their views. The following announcement was made in last weeks Ileach: "The Shoreline Project. An opportunity to offer your views on how this opportunity could benefit the built environment of Bowmore. Public Consultation Sessions will be held at Argyll and Bute Council Service Point, Jamieson Street, Bowmore from 10.30am-12.30pm on Friday 27 November and from 10am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-4.30pm on Saturday 28th November. Your ideas about - employment, parking, ferry services, affordable housing, environment, holiday homes, pedestrian access, cycle routes, landscape, architecture, style, school safety, hotels, parking, the visitor experience, supporting Main Street, shopping, services - or indeed anything else! The draft development proposals for the site will be submitted to Argyll and Bute Council in early 2010 as a first step towards inclusion in the new Local Plan being drawn up by the Council.

I will continue with more information on the Shoreline project tomorrow when I publish an article from the Ileach. In the meanwhile the press release from Urban Animation gives more information as well as a possibility on how to submit your views when you aren't able to visit the consultation sessions on Islay.

Big ideas and grand plans - where will the money come from in these recessionary times ? Rather have the cash spent ensuring that Islay continues have appropriate investment in the ferry service
