Becky Celebrates Islay Coastline Walk

After three and a half years and approximately 200 miles of walking, I (Becky Williamson) have finished my walk round Islay’s coastline. I completed the final stretch (Glen Astle to Kintra) on 29th April and decided I’d left the best till last! The weather helped, admittedly, but so did the fantastic views of Golden Eagle on the cliffs of The Oa, the incessant song of the Skylark high above my head and the sound of the crashing waves far beneath my feet. Having walked the entire coastline of the island - around 130 miles (the other 70 is accounted for by a number of necessary ‘there and back’ walks) – I am convinced that Islay’s coastal scenery rivals any in the British Isles. Yes, I may have taken my time, but I’ve soaked up more by taking it slowly and I’ve nearly enjoyed every minute!

As a grand finale I invited several folk who had taken part in my walk to join me in a ceremonial crossing of the River Laggan on 6th May. (It was extra ceremonial because it happened to be a big (ish) birthday for me). It was supposed to take place at the river’s mouth, but the tide was too high, so we cheated; I crossed the ropey swing bridge alone – and I can honestly say it was the scariest part of the entire walk! I would like to thank all those who have provided transport to and from locations, those who have walked with me and those who have sponsored me throughout the walk. Continue reading.....Whilst I have enjoyed my walk, I have been saddened and angered by the amount of debris on our beautiful beaches. Re-jig does a valuable work, but it can’t possibly do it all. If you haven’t already done so, please consider sponsoring me to raise funds for The Marine Conservation Society which seeks to protect our fragile coastal environment.
